the Plains are visible before 10 a.m., as otherwise the mist covers the view. The
highlight of the Plains is the
terrific escarpment which drops
vertically for about 1,000 feet. On a
very clear day, one could view the
east horizon too. Rare species of fauna and flora are found here. This Plain
was once the hunting ground for the British Governor Mr. Farr. Today the home
of Mr. Farr known as "Farr Inn" is still can be seen.

England’ of Sri Lanka, is set against beautiful backdrops of Mountains,
Valleys, Waterfalls and Tea Plantations. It is supposed
to be one of the coldest places on the island,
where the air is pure, cool and distilled up through
1,884 meters; windswept peaks
lie shrouded in mist, while gaily clad tea puckers wind their way among tea

Yala National
Park is the most visited and second largest national park in Sri Lanka. The
park consists of five blocks, two of which are now open to the public, and also
adjoining parks. The blocks have individual names such as, Ruhuna National Park
(block 1) and Kumana National Park or
'Yala East' for the adjoining area. It is situated in the southeast region of
the country, and lies in Southern Province and Uva Province. The park covers
979 square kilometers (378 sq mi) and is located about 300 kilo meters (190
miles) from Colombo. Yala was designated as a wildlife sanctuary in 1900, and, along with Wilpattu was one of the first two national
parks in Sri Lanka, having been designated in 1938.
The park is best known for its variety of wild animals. It is important
for the conservation of Sri Lankan elephants, Sri Lankan
leopards and aquatic birds.

There are six
national parks and three wildlife sanctuaries in the vicinity of Yala. Among
the largest is Lunugamvehera National Park. The park is situated in the dry
semi-arid climatic region and rain is received mainly during
the northeast monsoon. Yala hosts a variety of ecosystems ranging from moist
monsoon forests to freshwater and marine wetlands. It is one of the 70
Important Bird Areas (IBAs) in Sri Lanka. Yala harbours 215 bird species
including six endemic species of Sri Lanka. The number of mammals that has been recorded from the park is
44, and it has one of the highest leopard
densities in the world.

The area
around Yala has hosted several ancient civilisations. Two important pilgrim
sites, Sithulpahuwa and Magul Vihara, are situated within the park. The 2004
Indian Ocean tsunami caused severe damage on the Yala
National Park and 250 people died in its vicinity. The number
of visitors has been on the rise since 2009 after the security situation in the
park improved.

Galle is
famously known for the Fort built by the Portuguese and later captured and
expanded by the Dutch and British. It still retains some of its colonial charm
and some of the buildings have been repurposed into trendy boutiques and cafes. Located close by is the Hiyare Rainforest
Reservoir which hosts 55 species of dragonflies, 12 of which are unique to
Hiyare and 78 species of butterflies, 3 of which are endemic to the area and
species of freshwater fish, amphibians and mammals.

along the way.

Bentota- Facing the Indian
Ocean, a tropical lagoon and a major river Bentota
offers water sports possibilities nowhere else to be found. The name comes
from a mythical story which dates back to kings
time saying a demon called Bem ruled this river (tota = river bank). Bentota also delivers an ancient art of
healing called Ayurveda. The city is famous for its toddy production, an

Bazaar area, where is also a Hindu Temple with elaborate stone carvings, and
the Dutch Church of Wolfendhal dating back to 1749. Also visit the BMICH, see
the replica of Avukana Buddha and Independence Square.
